C42

The Comco Ikarus C42 is the best-selling ultralight aircraft in Germany and one of the most successful ultralight designs worldwide. Since the prototype's first flight in 1996, more than 1,600 units have been delivered. Manufacturer Comco Ikarus, based in Mengen, has maintained a market share of approximately 35 percent of new German ultralight registrations for years. The C42 is the successor to the C22 and has elevated that model's proven philosophy – forgiving flight characteristics, easy maintenance, low operating costs – to a contemporary standard.

The C42 is built using a mixed construction of steel tubes, aluminum and fiberglass sandwich elements. The current lineup includes three versions: the C42A (base model), the C42B with an improved cabin and optimized landing gear, and the C42C featuring the high-performance EH airfoil, winglets and improved engine cooling. Power comes from either the Rotax 912 UL (80 hp) or the Rotax 912 ULS (100 hp). A decisive advantage is its low empty weight of approximately 275 to 285 kg, allowing a useful load of nearly 200 kg.

Buyers looking for a used Comco Ikarus C42 will find a wide selection. Older C42A models start from around 20,000 to 25,000 euros, well-maintained C42B examples cost 28,000 to 45,000 euros. Newer C42C models with comprehensive equipment trade between 50,000 and 70,000 euros.

The C42's strengths are clear: extremely forgiving flight behavior that makes it the ideal training aircraft, low operating costs with affordable 100-hour inspections, easy repairability thanks to the bolted construction, and a dense network of service centers and workshops across Germany. The weaknesses include its relatively low cruise speed compared to modern carbon ultralights and the absence of modern cockpit features such as glass panels in the standard configuration.

The C42 is the first choice for student pilots, recreational pilots and anyone seeking an uncomplicated, proven ultralight with the best parts supply and workshop network in Germany.
