A22

The Aeroprakt A22 Foxbat is a classic among ultralight aircraft and has been in worldwide service for over 25 years. Designed by chief engineer Yuri Yakovlev at Aeroprakt in Kyiv, the prototype completed its maiden flight on October 21, 1996. To date, over 1,600 examples have been delivered – a testament to the popularity of this type. In Australia and the UK, the A22 is marketed as the "Foxbat," while in the US it is known as the "Valor."

The A22 is a two-seat, high-wing aircraft with a riveted aluminum fuselage structure and fabric-covered wings. The standard powerplant is the Rotax 912 ULS (100 hp). The stall speed is a remarkably low 52 km/h, while cruise speed is approximately 150–155 km/h at 75% power. Particularly impressive are the short-field capabilities: takeoff and landing are accomplished in well under 250 meters.

Buying a used Aeroprakt A22 on the German market is straightforward. Prices range from EUR 20,000 to EUR 55,000. Older A22 models start around EUR 20,000–25,000, while newer A22LS variants with the Rotax 912 ULS and good avionics cost EUR 45,000–55,000.

Strengths: Extremely forgiving flight characteristics with virtually no wing drop at the stall, outstanding STOL performance, exceptional all-around visibility thanks to a large windshield and glazed bubble doors, spacious cockpit, low purchase price and operating costs. Weaknesses: The cruise speed of approximately 150 km/h is relatively low compared to modern ultralights. The fabric-covered wings require regular inspection and are more susceptible to weather damage when stored outdoors. Payload capacity is limited, especially in the 472.5 kg MTOW class.

The A22 Foxbat is the ideal ultralight for beginners, student pilots, and aviators seeking a forgiving, low-maintenance, and affordable aircraft. It is also an excellent choice for pilots who enjoy flying into short grass strips, thanks to its STOL capabilities.
