About the CTLS
The Flight Design CTLS is the consistent evolution of the CTSW and is regarded as one of the most modern and versatile ultralight aircraft on the European market. The designation stands for "Composite Technology Light Sport" – the CTLS was originally developed in 2008 specifically for the international LSA market but has established itself equally well as a German ultralight in both the 472.5 kg and 600 kg classes. The CTLS has been EASA type-certified since 2020 and continues to be offered as the CTLSi as a new aircraft.
Compared to its predecessor CTSW, the CTLS brings numerous improvements: the fuselage is 30 cm longer, providing noticeably more cockpit space. Aerodynamics are further optimized – cruise speed is 210 to 230 km/h, with a range exceeding 1,300 km using the standard 129-liter tanks. The CTLS can be equipped with either the proven Rotax 912 ULS (100 hp) or the Rotax 912 iS (100 hp, direct injection). The fuel-injected engine reduces fuel consumption by up to 21 percent.
Buyers looking for a used Flight Design CTLS should expect prices between 50,000 and 90,000 euros. Examples with a Garmin G3X glass cockpit and the Rotax 912 iS sit at the upper end of this range. Factory-new CTLS configurations start at approximately 143,900 euros.
The CTLS's strengths win over demanding pilots: outstanding touring performance at over 210 km/h, a comfortable and spacious cockpit, the availability of modern Garmin or Dynon glass panels including an autopilot option, high build quality in full carbon fiber, and low cabin noise during cruise flight. Regarding weaknesses: the CTLS is relatively heavy for a well-equipped ultralight – those flying in the 472.5 kg class must carefully calculate their payload. Carbon repairs still require specialized workshops and are costly.
The CTLS is aimed at touring pilots seeking a fast, comfortable and modernly equipped ultralight for regular cross-country flights across Europe. In the same performance class, the CTLS competes with the Aerospool Dynamic WT9, BRM Aero Bristell and B&F FK14 Polaris.
